Attorney Lawrence Savell offers a checklist of Image of Social Network (2)eleven things to consider when Minimizing the Legal Risks of Using Online Social Networks.  In his post, he addresses:

  • Managing your social profile,
  • Your insurance coverage,
  • Language you should include for appropriate disclaimers,
  • Advertising restrictions,
  • Regulatory restrictions,
  • The need to follow through with what you say you will do online,
  • The terms and conditions of use,
  • Personal privacy,
  • Confidentiality and professional obligations,
  • Defamation,
  • Copyright concerns, and
  • Trademark concerns.

Although it’s not written specifically for mental health professionals, his points are well made and especially relevant to all of us in health care who choose to engage in social networking sites.  As attorney, John Riolo, Ph.D. is always quick to point out . . . “Ignorance of the law is no defense in court.”
