An Opportunity To Make A Difference And Grow Your Practice – Borderline Personality Disorder

How Much Longer?

I was listening today as one of the news shows Iimage of Time Spiralwas continuing to talk about the courage that actress Catherine Zeta-Jones has exhibitd by publicly acknowledging that she has Bipolar Disorder.  (Approximately 5.7 million adults in America have that same diagnosis.)  Here’s a list of some other famous individuals who have shared that diagnosis.

And, it got me to thinking . . . . How long is it going to be before we have someone famous come out as being diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder?  How much longer before we have an actual list of individuals who can courageously say “that’s the diagnosis I have” without stigma and shame?

I know . . . that’s not really the direct focus of this blog.  Still . . . it got me to thinking and wondering . . . in this lifetime . . . in my lifetime . . . how we as mental health professionals can make that happen . . . .

OK, so that’s me on my advocacy tangent and here’s what you landed on this page for . . . .

Do These Describe You?

  • Highly qualified to treat clients with a diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder?

  • Up to date with current research related to Borderline Personality Disorder?

  • Aware that the Borderline Personality Disorder is a biological, medical disorder that will need therapy as a follow-up after the client is treated medically?

If you answered “yes” to all three questions, then you may want to check out the website, BPD Sanctuary where you can be listed as a service provider for individuals who have been diagnosed as having Borderline Personality Disorder.

[Update Jun 09, 2011 -  OK, gang, so this is a first for me . . . . Julie in Virginia was kind enough to leave a comment below letting me know about the problem with the link above.  Indeed, it appears the link has be re-routed to a different website and I am unable to locate the opportunity that I just referenced above.

Given this glitch, I'm wondering if this might be a good opportunity to ask you guys . . . . Do you know of any online directories or lists that are specifically for service providers who work with individuals who have been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder?  If so, I hope you'll share the information by leaving a comment below.

Again, so sorry for the bad link!]

New Jersey Association Of Women Therapists

2011

Tonight I stumbled across a website for the New Jersey Association of Women Therapists.  This professional association describes itself as

organized to New Jersey Postage Stampprovide women therapists with an opportunity to meet for fellowship, for the exchange of ideas with colleagues, and for continuing education and professional growth.”

The membership appears to be very active including multiple opportunities to socialize, network, and obtain professional development as well as an online therapist directory.

If you are in New Jersey, you may want to check this group out.  And, if you are outside of New Jersey and feeling a bit isolated, you may want to visit the website to get some great ideas for forming your own local professional association.

Psychology Today, Theravive, And Other Directories

Jan

2011

One of my colleagues, Phil Ginsburg, wrote in with the following question:

I was wondering if you have ever used listing services or lead generation services like Psychology Today, or Theravive….or any others?

I’m so glad that he asked.  I’ve been meaning to talk about this and needed the nudge. I do not pay for any type of lead generation services unless you consider online Image of Psychology Today, Theravive, Other Directoriesdirectories to be of that ilk.  (I do not.)

I do pay for a listing with Psychology Today.  And, from time to time, I have considered the possibility of paying for listings with other mental health online directories.  However, to date, I’ve used only Psychology Today and have found it to be useful in generating inquiries into my clinical practice.

My rule of thumb (for any type of paid listing or advertisement) is that if I break even, then it was worth my financial investment.  My reasoning is this . . . .  If I invest $300 / year and generate only $300 worth of business directly from that investment, I am assuming that my client was so deliriously happy with my services (because that is my goal) that s/he left and told several others about me.  And, THAT’s much more valuable to me than receiving even double my investment!

It is worth noting, though, that there are many other online directories that are available at no charge.  I am listed in some of those and would encourage you to list in as many of those as you can. Here is a partial list of directories that I posted in November.  If you know of others, let me know and I’ll be happy to update the list!

List Of Online Therapist Directories Updated

Nov

2010

Last year, you asked for a list of online directories where you could list your services.  Here is an updated list of those that readers have sent to me.

Note that many of these require a fee to list your practice with them.

Have I missed any?  If so, you can list them here.  And, if you’ve had any direct experience (positive or negative) with any of these, please let us know!  Are you getting any business from these?
